                             "Gus"

     About Me!

Hi!  My name is Gus - I am a big, friendly, affectionate and loyal Weimaraner dog.  I live with my best mate Ben, his parents and four cats.

I am very easy to please.  I like going for walks, taking a dip in the pond and lying in the sun.  I am quite adaptable, too, and my family can take me just about anywhere so I can enjoy a lazy afternoon in their company.

I don't like everything and everybody I meet, however.  I don't like all dogs and I don't like the postman.  But, I am doing a pretty good job of protecting the family and house, especially since the postman arrives almost everyday and I always manage to make him quickly go away.  With the family safe, I can sneak in a nap, or two, and be refreshed for my master's arrival home, where my ritual is pure over-excitement (and some jumping).

When I was little I liked to chew/destroy TV handsets and mobile phones (the flip-top ones).  Although I am sooooo over that now, I've now taken to selective recall and pulling on the lead (and my litttle problem with other dogs).  For these reasons, I was sent to Royvon as a Pampered dog.

Barry is my Trainer and he has been teaching me to recall to a whistle.  I also don't pull on the lead anymore, and he can easily distract me and control me when I approach, or am approached by another dog.  He recognises the second I start thinking of having a go and he very quickly gets my attention with his voice, the gentle clink of training discs, food or my ball.  Once my focus is away from the other dog, I am completely fine and he thinks that if I practise this a lot for a long time, I may be able to eventually PLAY with other dogs!-?-!  He also says that it's important to stay calm around me, because I do feed off the energy of those around me (especially my family!)- and when we see other dogs together, we both get really anxious, which makes it worse.  I do respond to calm authority and for this reason, he thinks that with all my new skills, I am going to continue to be shaped into a really, really good dog!!!
